Millican Achieves Goal of Consistency at NHRA Arizona Nationals

Chandler, AZ (February 26, 2017) – The Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster driven by Clay Millican raced to the quarterfinals at the NHRA Arizona Nationals outside Phoenix this past weekend.

Millican went into race day qualified No. 8 with an elapsed time of 3.710 at 321.96 mph. He faced Troy Buff in Round One and they were the first pair of the day with an air temperature of 66 degrees and a track temperature of only 81 degrees. Millican had the advantage off the starting line and never lost it. He defeated Troy Buff with a time of 3.763 at 322.58 mph. to 3.814 at 308.57 mph.

“Going into first round, you’re racing Bill Miller with Troy Buff driving and that car has all the sudden shown some really good performance, so we can’t take him lightly,” said Millican. “But we ran 3.76, which was kind of our intent, and we got the round win.”

In Round Two Millican came up against defending event champion Leah Pritchett. He is 4 – 3 in previous match-ups with Pritchett. Millican had a slight advantage off the starting line with a .093 reaction time to Pritchett’s .117, but the Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH dragster started to haze the tires and Millican pedaled the car to get back in the race.

“We were not really concerned with how good her performance has been this year, because we knew we just needed to repeat what we did in Q4. The track kind of surprised us, I think. We were not trying to do anything that we weren’t doing all weekend,” Millican said. “Pritchett’s car is tough right now and from the outside looking in, it looked like we probably tuned it up to outrun her, but that’s not really the case. Grubby will figure out why it smoked the tires, but it wasn’t because we were trying to run 3.65. We were just trying to run 3.70 – 3.71; that’s all we were trying to do.”

Millican leaves the NHRA Arizona Nationals tenth in points. Next up for the team is the 2017 Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida on March 16 – 19, 2017.

Millican Expects Better Performance From Dragster at NHRA Arizona Nationals

McLeansboro, IL (February 22, 2017) – Clay Millican and the Stringer Performance team will be in familiar territory this weekend for the 2017 NHRA Arizona Nationals. They tested the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just a few short weeks ago.

“We’re excited to go back to Phoenix and race,” said Millican. “We were just there testing and some parts we didn’t use in Pomona will be back on the dragster in Arizona.”

The test session was very productive and labeled a success by Millican. Crew chief David “Grubby” Grubnic had the team try new parts, combinations and even a new air-intake manifold set-up. Millican’s best pass of the week was a 3.739 second run at 288.87 mph.

At the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona two weeks ago, the Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH dragster only made one full-pass during qualifying, but it was enough to land Millican in the No. 10 spot. Unfortunately he was eliminated in Round One.

“Obviously we were not happy with the results in Pomona,” Millican said. “In Phoenix we will be back to what we know and we expect to see the car run numbers we were seeing last season.”

At this event last year, Millican defeated Troy Buff and Tony Schumacher to make it to the semifinal round.

FOX Sports 1 (FS1) will have three-hours of coverage from the NHRA Arizona Nationals on Sunday beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Millican Remains Optimistic Despite Early Exit in Pomona

McLeansboro,IL (February 14, 2017) – Clay Millican and the Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH Top Fuel dragster qualified strong before making an early exit at the 2017 Circle K Nationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona this past weekend.

All eyes were on the sky for qualifying. Rain was forecasted for both Friday and Saturday. On Friday Top Fuel teams were only able to make one qualifying pass before rain started falling. Tire smoke right off the starting line prevented the team from getting in a good pass.

After morning showers on Saturday, Top Fuel dragsters were able to get in two qualifying passes. On Q3 Millican double-stepped off the line, but still ran an impressive 3.815 E.T. at 313.95 mph. In Q4, Millican had his hands full driving in a wild ride that made all the highlight reels. The dragster drifted and almost crossed the centerline and went sideways.

“The car went into a shake right away and it needed to be pedaled, but that wouldn’t give us a good elapsed time. So I just stayed with it hoping the shake would clear up, but it didn’t,” said Millican. “It finally went into smoke then it just slid out a bit because I stayed with it a bit too long. It actually looked more exciting that it really was in the car.”

Qualifying in the No. 10 position, Millican faced Terry McMillen in Round One. They were the first pair down the track at the first race of the season. Off the start the Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH dragster appeared to lose cylinders and the engine let go at the end. Some oil was spilled on the track and Millican was penalized five points.

“We only did that [oil-down] once all last season, so that’s disappointing,” Millican said. “But at least we got this year’s only oil-down out of the way early in the season.”

After race one of 24, Millican is No. 14 in points in Top Fuel. Next up for the team: The NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix, AZ on February 24 – 26, 2017 at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. The team spent the first week of February testing there and is excited to head back.

“We can’t wait to get back out there in two weeks. This is going to be a great year for our fans and all our sponsors, I guarantee ya,” said Millican.

Millican & Stringer Set On Bringing Home First NHRA Win In 2017

McLeansboro, IL (FEBRUARY 8, 2017) – Stringer Performance and Clay Millican have teamed up for a third year to race the Great Clips, Parts Plus, University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The 2017 season kicks off for this Friday at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Millican completed the 2016 season in the 10th position and was the number one qualifier at two of the biggest races of the year: The U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and the Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas. This year, Stringer Performance owner, Doug Stringer, wants to put his dragster in the Winner’s Circle.

“Our focus from day one is to win. We want to win each time we are at the race; that’s what our goal is,” said Stringer. “Last year we focused on getting into the top-ten and we did that. This is our third year and now we’ve got the data, education and crew to make it happen. We want to win races and compete for the NHRA Mello Yello Championship.”

Millican is a six-time World Champion in IHRA Drag Racing, but his first NHRA Wally has eluded him. He has made it to the finals eight times in his NHRA career.

“I am eager to win my first NHRA race. I want to get that first win out of the way immediately,” Millican said. “I’ve had eight final round appearances and I’m closing in on the record for the most runner-up finishes without winning. That is a record I do not want.”

Millican and the team just finished three days of Nitro Spring Training in Phoenix where crew chief David “Grubby” Grubnic had a long list of ideas to improve performance of the Parts Plus/ Great Clips dragster. The team tried out several new parts and combinations to help propel them to victory in 2017.

“As per normal Grubby came to testing with pages of plans. Each pass we would make a set amount of changes,” said Millican. “Nitro Spring Training is for testing and that is exactly what we did. We never intended to try and make the fastest run; that was not our priority. We want to be top qualifier at Pomona.”
