Millican Focused on Points in Countdown to the Championship

Reading, PA (September 24, 2017) – For Clay Millican, earning points towards the NHRA Mello Yello Championship was a big priority this weekend at the Dodge NHRA Nationals. Millican and the Stringer Performance team are battling to win the NHRA Top Fuel Championship.

“We got points on the brain. We’re looking at the bonus points, the qualifying points; everything necessary to get ourselves moved up. We’re right on the heels of everyone. This points battle is tight,” said Millican.

Thanks to a qualifying run of 3.699 at 327.27 mph in the heat of the day on Friday, Millican earned 3 bonus points and put the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio dragster in the No. 1 qualifying spot. This is the fourth time this season that Millican earned the top qualifying spot.

Because only 15 drivers entered the race, Millican had a bye-run first round. While he did not have an opponent in the other lane, he laid down an impressive 3.705/328.62 run, which was low of the session and the day.

In Round two, he came up against Antron Brown. Brown had a slight starting line advantage and took the win: 3.778/311.49 to 4.003/231.60.

“It’s been an up and down day. It certainly started on a high note with a 3.70 on the first pass. That car was absolutely flying. We were low E.T. of first round,” Millican said. “Antron’s had my number, but we beat him last race. I thought we were off and running on this one. The car put a cylinder out and the engine hurt itself.”

Next for Millican is the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis on September 29 – October 1. This is the home race for Stringer Performance, which is based out of McLeansboro, Illinois.

Millican Relishes Reading Memories, But Ready To Make New Ones

READING, PA (September 20, 2017) – Clay Millican has experienced some dramatic moments at Maple Grove Raceway in past years, but this weekend he hopes to make some new and positive memories at the Dodge NHRA Nationals.

“I always look forward to going to Reading because it is typically super-fast there. I really have confidence in our car. We can go there and possibly set the national record,” Millican said. “This car is running so good whether it’s hot or cold. And a lot of times conditions do present themselves at Maple Grove and everybody will be going for it. I feel like we have the opportunity to go there and set a new record. I really do.”

One of the most infamous moments in NHRA racing happened at Maple Grove Raceway in 2002 involving Millican and then rival Doug Herbert. A staging war between the two lead to some angry words, shoving and pushing: all on live television.

“I can’t ever think about Reading without thinking about Doug Herbert; It’s part of drag racing history,” said Millican. “He became Dougzilla after that weekend. It’s something I always think about when I go there. Fans still talk about it when I go there.”

Last year also presented drama when weather canceled one day of racing and condensed qualifying gave most drivers only one session to get in the show. Millican was qualified 17 out of 16, but was lucky to get a second run in before rain started falling again.

“Last year was definitely crazy. I made a mistake on one of the qualifying sessions; we smoked the tires. Knowing rain was coming, I should have got back on the throttle and I didn’t. We were sitting in the lanes and it was sprinkling and we were sweating whether we were going to be able to make that run or not. We ended up making a good run and getting ourselves in the deal,” said Millican.

The 2017 Dodge NHRA Nationals is the second stop in the NHRA playoff season. Millican comes into the race No. 6 spot in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Millican Off To Great Start In The Countdown To The Championship

Concord, NC (September 17, 2017) – Clay Millican made a great showing at the first stop in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. Millican drove the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster to a semifinal finish at the NHRA Carolina Nationals.

Millican set the tone for the weekend straight out of the gate. In the first session of qualifying he shot to the top spot with an elapsed time of 3.761 at 322.96 mph. This gave him three valuable bonus points. On Saturday, he ran the low E.T. of the session again, earning another three points.

Millican came into race day qualified fifth with an elapsed time of 3.747 at 319.82 mph.
In Round One, Millican came up against Dom Lagana. Millican set low E.T. of the round with a 3.725/322.81 to Lagana’s 3.839/314.83.

In Round Two, Millican came up against Antron Brown. It was an extremely close race with Millican getting the win over Brown: 3.754/323.35 to 3.776/323.89. Once again, it is Millican who sets low E.T. of the round.

“We’ve had a lot of issues racing Antron; He’s had my number. But I knew when I hit the throttle we were off and running. We beat Antron by point zero, zero, five and turned the win light on. A great drag race for the fans to watch and a great win light for this team,” said Millican.

In the semifinals, Millican faced Doug Kalitta. Millican was in the lead for a good portion of the race, but it was Kalitta who took the win, 3.784/322.50 to 3.804/313.73.

“We were quite a bit ahead early in the run. Coming up on half-track we were still ahead, but we had something going on with the super charger and the boost came down a little bit and we got out run,” Millican said. “Now what’s happened in the points is the top three drivers went out early and the bottom of the class moved up. This is going to be an exciting countdown.”

Up next for the Stringer Performance Top Fuel dragster team is the 2017 Dodge NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pennsylvania, September 21 – 24, 2017.

Second Year In A Row Millican Tops Qualifying and Sets Track Record At U.S. Nationals

Indianapolis, IN (September 4, 2017) – For the second year in a row, Clay Millican earned the No. 1 qualifying spot and set a Lucas Oil Raceway track record at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. He now has three of the top 10 quickets runs, in Top Fuel history.

On Saturday evening, Millican drove the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster to an elapsed time of 3.663 at 329.10 mph. This put him in the top qualifying spot, set the Top Fuel E.T. record at Lucas Oil Raceway and became the seventh fastest Top Fuel pass ever.

“My confidence is now at an all-time high. I know when I get in that race car it can run with anybody here, at any time, without a question. Our car is quick as anybody’s in the world right now,” Millican said. “This is a tune up David Grubnic has been working on for three years. This is his tune up, not somebody else’s he is massaging. Grubby never quits thinking and never sits still.”

On top of setting the record and qualifying No. 1, Millican made five clean passes that earned him 11 bonus points, which were critical to securing a spot in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. He attributes his recent success to his crew.

“It’s all about the people. We have all the right people in the right place. It’s starts with Doug and works its way down to the kids working on this car. They’re an amazing group of young guys,” Millican said. “Every Sunday night we get the crew together to talk about what went right, why we won and why we lost. They work so hard without the recognition they deserve. They are the ones that make this car go. We have a heck of a team. I’m more confident in this car than any other car I’ve driven in my life.”

Unfortunately, Millican made in early exit on race day. In the first round Millican came up against No. 16 qualifier, Kebin Kinsley. While Millican made a great pass of 3.756/323.97, Kinsley took the win on a holeshot running 3.813/318.02.

“It was a close race and I had a .077 reaction time, but Kebin had a .014 light. Hats off to him on a good run,” Millican said.

At the end of the day, Millican clinched the No.7 spot in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Next up is the NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 15 – 17, 2017. This is the first race in the Countdown, so points are reset and the Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH team will start from the seventh position with six races to reach the number one spot.
