McLeansboro, IL (March 14, 2017) – It’s not just about racing this week for Parts Plus/Great Clips/UNOH Top Fuel driver Clay Millican. It’s about helping one of his favorite charities and reuniting with his East Coast friends.
The 2017 Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals is the first race of the season on the East Coast. For Millican, who is from Tennessee, this is his chance to watch his closest friends in action.
“This is the first chance I have to watch all my friends I grew up racing with, compete this year,” Millican said. “Most of the Sportsmen teams who live around me don’t make the trek to Pomona or Phoenix, so this is like the East Coast racers spring break.”
Previously at Gainesville Raceway, Millican made it to the finals in 2013 and in 2016 he made it to the semifinals but was defeated by Terry McMillen. He admits both of these races were very memorable.
“In 2013 I raced Antron in the finals and I felt we had a good shot at winning. Even thought we were the runner-up, I was able to watch several good friends win in Sportsmen,” said Millican. “And I don’t like to lose, it was hard to be mad after losing Terry in the semifinals last year. This was his first trip to the finals and he had struggled so many times at his sponsor’s race. When we got out of our cars he picked me up and was swinging me everywhere. It’s hard not to smile when he did that.”
First up on Millican’s schedule this week is to participating in the Drag Racing Association of Women’s (D.R.A.W.) annual Tracy Winters Golf Tournament in Gainesville.
“D.R.A.W. is very special to me and this is just one way I can help them out,” said Millican. “Most people don’t realize how much work these women do to help racers when they are injured. What they do is just incredible.”
Fans will have a chance to meet Millican on Saturday at 10:30 at the Mello Yello Powerhouse on the Midway and 10:45 at the NHRA Autograph Session at the Top Eliminator Club at Gainesville Raceway.
